Professor Marc A. Hertzman received an honorable mention for the best book in the 2024 Latin American Studies Association Brazil Section Prizes for his book After Palmares: Diaspora, Inheritance, and the Afterlives of Zumbi

In After Palmares, Hertzman examines the history of Palmares, one of largest and longest-lasting societies formed by people who escaped slavery. Palmares lasted for a century in Northeastern Brazil and continues to be a symbol of Black pride today, a legacy Hertzman explores in the book. In an interview with the News Bureau, Hertzman shared how he "he wanted to learn how the memory of Zumbi and Palmares survived from 1695 to the present and what it means today."

Hertzman's book has received international attention in Brazil and the UK. He has been interviewed by BBC and Folha de São Paulo.
