The Department of History is pleased to announce that professor Marc Hertzman was awarded an honorable mention for the prestigious James Alexander Robertson Prize for the best article published in the Hispanic American Historical Review by the Conference on Latin American History. His article, "The 'Indians' of Palmares: Conquest, Insurrection, and Land in Northeast Brazil," examines the indigenous people of Palmares, the site of one of history's largest fugitive slave communities who were defeated by the Portuguese in 1695. Professor Hertzman also recently published a book on the same topic, After Palmares: Diaspora, Inheritance, and the Afterlives of Zumbi (Duke University Press). Congratulations!
